Created Illusions with Lines, Shapes and Patterns!

The Year 5 students have been inspired by paintings by the artist, Gustav Klimt to create perfectly patterned art pieces.
They responded to his painting, 'Portrait of Adele Bloch Bauer 1', a painting from his 'golden phase'.

They noticed how his subject's faces and skin were painted in a more realistic style while the rest of their clothing was a blur and blend of gold and pattern. They also commented on how his patterns were dominated by geometric shapes and 'eyes'.

Many of the students thought this could mean she was either watching or felt like she was being watched by others.

They found a facial portrait in a magazine, drew outfits in proportion to the face and then covered the page with metallic paint. Smooth for the clothing and a textured effect for the background.

Once dry, they created intricate patterns to develop sections of the clothing without outlining but by using implied line (where the brain tricks the eye to thinking a line is there) and changes in their patterns.
