Complementary Colours in Perspective!

Year 4 students have been revising some colour theory and creating space techniques to create some artistically effective art pieces. They used a copy of their landscape drawings and looked at highlighting an interesting part through the use of perspective and complementary colour pairs

A 2D shape was used to surround the interesting part and then by drawing straight lines from each corner of the shape to a point on the horizon line (vanishing point) it created the illusion that the shape was closer to the viewer.

Complementary colours are also used in art to make parts stand out. They work together to highlight or make sections 'pop out'. The complementary colours are; red and green, purple and yellow and blue and orange (a favourite of mine to wear 😉).

Students were only allowed to used two water colour pencils in their chosen complementary pair but were able to change the intensity of each colour, depending on how much water they used to dilute the colours.

What a simple but effective way of drawing the audiences attention to a specific part of your artwork.
