Art Theory
Here is some of the Visual Art Theory we have covered in our art classes so far.
Colour
Primary Colours are Special! They can not be made but they can make numerous other colours by being mixed together.
If you are only allowed to buy 3 paints/crayons/pencils/coloured clay... then these are the three to get!
Primary Colours are Red, Yellow and Blue.
Red + Yellow = Orange
Yellow + Blue = Green
Blue + Red = Purple
Orange, Green and Purple are known as the Secondary Colours.
Brown can be made by mixing all three Primary Colours.
Tertiary Colours are created by mixing a Primary with a Secondary Colour.
This will generally make a lighter and darker version of the Secondary Colour.
When naming the Tertiary Colours we say the Primary Colour first. For example,
Yellow + Green = Yellow-green
Blue + Green = Blue-green
They are also known by other names, for example,
Red-purple can be known as Magenta
Yellow-orange can be called Amber

Lines (& Texture)
Lines are where we start in art. They can form the shapes that we wish to make, the patterns that add interest to our design and can give the illusion of texture - the way that something feels. This is know as implied texture. Real texture, is when we can actually touch and feel it.
Shape
When creating our artworks we can use Geometric Shapes such as triangles, squares and rectangles. These shapes are more precise and are generally the ones we have a name for.
Organic Shapes are more free and natural. They can take on any form and while not official, in the art room we can call them blobs, splats or what they most look like eg, a flower, bird, person etc.
Space
The cover pages created by the Year 5 and 6 classes used Positive and Negative Space (or Shape). These terms are often interchangeable, however, it is easy to think of it as; the positive space is where the object is and the negative is the space around or where there is not the image.
The Year 5 and 6 classes will be using positive and negative space when creating stencils for screen printing in their Harmony Day artworks.
We will be learning more about using and creating Space within our artworks through out the year.
