 Peter Coad Inspired Landscapes

Year Three students have been inspired by the beautiful painting of Australian Artist, Peter Coad. They looked at how he painted layers of colour to represent different types of ground in his landscapes. They drew a horizon line and then painted layers using water colour paint. they blended the water colour in the sky to create a sunrise or sunset effect.

Students also noticed how Coad created texture on top of his coloured layers to show the type of ground. Using acrylic paint, they experimented with different tools to help achieve thier desired texture for thier ground types. Peter Coad often included birdlife in his paintings. Some students painted a swan or crane beginning with geometric shapes identified in a directed drawing activity.

Finally, students looked for natural found objects that could be used to represent trees, rocks, hills and other landscape features. This created a mixed media art piece with implied texture (the acrylic painting) and actual texture (the found objects).

So impressed with how creative the Year 3s fabulous mixed media artworks turned out.
