Warm Woven Fish on Cool Bubble Backgrounds!

Year 1 and 2 classes have been looking at the artwork of Australia artist, Annette James. Annette lives in Cairns, Queensland and paints many pictures of the rain forest and Great Barrier Reef. After responding to her painting, The Stars of Green Island, students in Year 1 looked at the warm and cool colour groups on the colour wheel and in our water colour pallets. They painted recycled bubble wrap in different cool colours and printed the texture onto paper. They then drew their own fish shape which they sponged using warm colours. Students will be weaving warm coloured paper strips through their fish before adding them to their printed background.

Great Barrier Reef Prints

Year 2 classes had some messy fun mixing acrylic paint on a printing pallet and then drawing underwater images in the paint. They covered their design with a sheet of paper, printing the image on to their page. They will be adding mixed media to create seaweed, coral and sea animals to their printed background.

Twinkling Tea Light Covers in Clay

Year 5 classes have created these gorgeous tea light cover out of clay. They used the slab method to create a rectangle from which they cut out shapes. They curved the clay slab around and joined the ends using slurry (clay and water mixture) which acts like a glue for clay. After the cylinders were fired they added colour in their chosen colour scheme.

Water Colour Australian Landscape Paintings

Year 6 classes have been looking at artist, Albert Namatjira and his water colour paintings of the Australian Landscape. They discussed and identified ways in which he created the illusion of space within his artworks including, size, overlapping, detail and colour. Students then painted their own landscapes in water colours, incorporating some of his techniques for creating the illusion of space.
