Blended Oil Pastel Blooms!

The Year 6 classes have been exploring different techniques for blending oil pastels. They tried 6 different blending techniques; colour theory mixing, light colour blending, blending with a finger or tissue or using water or baby oil to blend. Their goal for this art exploration was to find techniques they preferred, identify how different techniques could create certain effects and ones they would avoid. They quickly found out that blending with water doesn’t actually work.

 When using the oil pastels, they identified how to hold their oil pastel to have more control and thick, vibrant colours. They also used vertical stroke directions so the petals looked like they were growing out from a centre point. The blended oil pastel strips were placed together and cut into a petal shape all at the same time. This is a great trick to create multiple shapes that are exactly the same. 

These were arranged onto black card that had been folded and the points trimmed to create interesting shape once opened back up and placed onto a coloured background. This turned their exploration and experimentation of oil pastel blending into a beautiful piece of art work in itself.
